One of the legacy projects supported by Bishops’ Appeal earlier this year is starting to take shape – the additional rooms at Manara (Beacon) School in Egypt. The school is situated on land within an educational project site of the Anglican Church of Egypt in the district of Menoufia, just outside Cairo. In a social context where children with disabilities are often marginalized, the school offers a safe, dignified, and inclusive learning environment that affirms the value of every child. The extra rooms that are now under construction will double the number of children who can benefit from the care and life skills provided.
On a recent visit to Northern Ireland for CMSI’s Ignite Conference Madame Madeleine, wife of Archbishop Samy Fawzy, met up with the Bishops’ Appeal Education Advisor, Hilary McClay to tell how the legacy grant is being spent and the difference that the new facilities will bring to the children at the school. This is very much an answer to prayer for the church in Egypt to receive the legacy funds and one that they are very grateful for. The new rooms are being called “Audrey’s Rooms” in memory of the lady whose legacy has enabled this to happen.
Bishops’ Appeal committee member, Rev Faith Sithole, is hoping to visit the school and see Audrey’s Rooms for herself, in a visit to Cairo in the next while.
